The violinist Federico Nathan (Montevideo, 1986) is one of the greatest

improvising violinist of our time. He performs as a soloist in

ensembles and orchestras around the world. Being a versatile

musician, he participates in projects of a wide range of musical genres

and leads his own project, being the latter the meeting point of his

fervent creative curiosity.

In his music Federico Nathan proposes a journey through different

sound universes, erasing the barrier between classical music and

popular music by creating a free of prejudices and profoundly

imaginative music.

Elements of rock, jazz, classical music as well as of Uruguayan

music converge in his music , while the balance of the planned

and the unplanned tips from one moment to the next.

In his music, Federico Nathan proposes a journey through different sound universes, erasing the barrier between classical music and popular music by creating a free of prejudices and profoundly

imaginative music. Elements of rock, jazz, classical music as well as Uruguayan

music converge in his music, while the balance of the planned and the unplanned tips from one moment to the next.

From an early age, Uruguayan violinist and composer Federico Nathan has had a great interest in the world of improvisation. This led him to create groups of various styles so that he could develop this activity.​ Federico’s arrangements have been recorded by prestigious labels such as DECCA (“Fearless” by trumpeter Manuel Blanco, 2017). As a composer and performer, he has premiered pieces for Orchestra, Chamber Groups, and Soloists all over the world.

As a soloist, Federico has performed with musicians such as Snarky Puppy, Steve Vai, Banda Magda, and Chano Domínguez, with whom he has a duo project. He also works occasionally as a soloist with the Metropole Orchestra in Holland (the winners of three Grammy Awards) with whom he has made a number of recordings side by side with artists such as Joshua Redman, Gregory Porter, Esperanza Spalding, Quincy Jones, and Jacob Collier.

Federico graduated from the Reina Sofia Higher School of Music in Madrid (2005), the University of Indiana (2008), the Center des Musiques Didier Lockwood in Paris (2009), and the Hochschule Hanns Eisler in Berlin (2014). For his compositions, he has received several honorable mentions: Reina Sofia Madrid (2004), Young Talents (Boston Bank Foundation of Uruguay, 2006), and awards: the National Award for Music (Uruguay, 2012 and 2015), Jazz Community at the Clazz Latin Jazz Festival (Spain, 2013), the “Best Band Award” at the EuropaFest International Competition (Romania, 2013), and the Fraternity Award (Israel-Uruguay, 2017).

In 2011 Federico joined the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in the largest live stream concert in the world so far, reaching 33.5 million views. Since 2017 he has been the String Professor at the Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain. Federico is a member of the Cuareim Quartet and leads the Federico Nathan Project.
